Dee and I hosted the 2002 Reunion in Northern California. This was a "once in a lifetime" opportunity for all hands to experiencea California 's diversity and beauty.105 guests enjoyed the Reunion and 34 guests extended the Reunion to visit Yosemite National Park.

I wonder, if an Alaskan Reunion was offered, how many would seize the opportunity to take a "once in a lifetime" trip to experience Alaska's scenic grandure and wildlife ? America's last frontier is magnificent . There is a National Park larger than Vermont, New Hampshire and Connecticut combined. There are 24 mountains taller than 20,000 feet.
There is a glacier that would stretch from Boston to Washington D.C.
There are more caribou than people. There are native cultures tens of thousands of years old.

If enough interest is shown in the survey below, Dee and I will plan and host this spectacular Reunion.

Give it some thought...........................Jim

To date, we have had one positive response. What about the remainder of you crew members?

Is there interest, or what?

Please let me know either way........................Jim

Alaskan Cruises are at "Bargain Basement " costs. Seven day, four port cruises on four star vessels start at $469.00 per person out of Seattle. If we book 16 staterooms, a luxury suite is tossed in as a hospitality suite.
You can scarcely book a hotel and purchase meals for this amount. Some lines are offering military discounts on top of these fares. Is there enough interest ? Please respond, either way............Jim

Linda and I would be interested. Will this take place in the summer? We can only hope that the old salts get onboard.

A 14 day cruise and road trip would be more like what I am interested in.

Hi Jim,
Caryl and I would be interested, if the 2006 Seattle reunion had happened we were looking into combining it with a cruise but it didn't happen. Are you stepping up and proposing an Alaska cruise for an upcoming reunion and if so what year? If you are looking into doing something (unofficial) in the near future, I wouldn't be able to this year but who knows perhaps next year. Say hi to Dee.
Later...

The earliest that we could host an Alaska Reunion would be Summer, 2013.

We are already BOOKED for 2012 as it is our 50th Anniversary and we are on our way to Southeast Alaska on the Alaska Marine Highway ferry system in our mini-motorhome. We will be gone 5 months, all Summer.

We are researching the cruises out of Seattle and as the country slips further into recession, we believe that fares will continue to decrease.

California has real problems believing the national press. Gas is over $4.00 a gallon and the buzz is that $5.00 gas is weeks away. Some gas is already $4.89. We haven't had gas below $3.75 in months. Deisel is $4.59 to $4.89 a gallon and everything in the store is affected since trucks haul all items.

The Dems wipped out 30% of our agriculture by turning off the ag water. Your produce aisle is suffering to save the "Delta Smelt". All you environmental whackos can cheer, but $3.50 apples are on the way. Lettuce that used to cost 39 cents a head is now about a buck. California produces over 15 % of all produce and food will soon rival gas for cost increases.

There are 80 million households in the US. About 1/3 are rentals. There are 18 million family owned households in foreclosure. About 1 in 3 family owned homes is being lost. Areas in California have foreclosure rates approaching 45% for all homes. 10% of all Americans live here and we just don't believe the "Summer of Recovery" line that Joe Bidden is pedaling. Summer is long since over and unemployment is increasing above 12.2 %. The bet is that we will drag the country into a double dip.

This could be a bonanza for those who still have jobs or are retired and don't have a job to lose. Big ticket items, like cruises, are already offering $1,500 to $2,000 bonuses to fill the hundreds of ships and the thousands of cruise itineraries. By 2013, even deeper discounts could be the order of the day. We will continue to follow and report.

Regards.........................Dee and Jim

A seven day, Alaska cruise out of Seattle, with stops in Ketchican, Juneau,Glacier Bay, Skagway and Victoria, B.C. on the Saphire Princess, a 5 star vessel, is going for $455 per person with a 54% discount and a $150 per cabin on board allowance. You can't stay in most hotels for this price and all meals are included.

Interest has been VERY SLOW, even at these bargain basement prices. It would cost me twice as much to fly to Newport as this entire cruise. Think I'll take the cruise and skip Newport.

California will be America's Greece. Unemployment here in many counties is above 45%. Invest your dollars in travel while they still have some value. It would cost over $400.00 to fill the tank on my RV, but I'm still going to travel. California Deisel approaching $5.00 per gallon. In the Sacramento housing market, over 50% of homes are under water financially and in foreclosure. You are not being told the truth by the media. California is in a depression; a perfect time to travel.

Regards.................................Jim

California's governor is working hard to solve the Golden State's 28.6 Billion dollar deficit. To date he has:

-Closed 70 of the state's 278 parks
- Taken away all state cars from elected officials
- Frozen all state hiring
-Frozen all state salaries
- Released thousand of felons to reduce prison costs
- Furlouged all state employees for one day each week w/o pay

He is about to:

- Reduce all state salaries
-Reduce all future state pension plans
-Reduce existing state pensions
-Propose a major state tax increase (it will fail)

He has the same problem faced nationally. Only 12 % of California's spending is discretionary. The remainder is mandated. This leaves little room to cut spending without reducing mandatory programs like MediCal, Welfare and Eduucation. State revenues are down 14%.

Illegal aliens are granted immediate access to these mandated programs and are taking California down. We have reached the point in California where you must be bi-ligual to be hired in many jobs. 43 % of children entering first grade do not speak English.

Counties, and cities are taking similar actions:

-Laying off police
-Laying off firefighters
-Closing fire stations
-Closing schools
-Raising building permit fees which shuts down construction jobs
(Permits for a 3br/2ba home approaching $185,000)

So why worry? California is far away and doesn't matter. The California economy is 10% of America's and larger than France. California is America' Greece. California unemployment at 12.4% and rising.

We are all in for a hard landing............................Jim

British PM Margret Thatchers quote is:

The only thing wrong with socialism is that pretty soon you run out of other peoples money. California is proving this in spades...

What does the problem with CA have to do with a Alaska Reunion. It should be elsewhere. Please stick to the topic information please.

The pending depression in the nation will continue to make $5,000.00 Cruises available for under $500.00.

WE should put our politics on hold and enjoy the bargains. There are thousands of dollars in discounts available as the cruise industry reponds to the reality of this crisis. Why not take advantage?
